What a Catch Basin Is
A catch basin is a buried concrete chamber with a cast-iron grate on top. Surface water flows through the grate, drops into a sump well at the base that captures sediment, then exits horizontally through a PVC discharge pipe to your storm sewer or a dry well. The sump well stops debris from clogging the discharge line. In Mississauga’s lower-lying neighbourhoods near the lake, the sump is especially important — those properties handle a higher silt load during heavy rain events because of upstream runoff from neighbouring lots.

- Excavate the basin pit and discharge trench with our Yanmar SV40 mini-excavator. Typical depth is 4-5 ft at the basin and 3 ft along the trench for frost protection.
- Set the precast basin on compacted Granular A and connect the PVC discharge with at least 1% slope toward the outlet.
- Backfill with 3/4 clear stone around the basin, soil along the trench, compact in lifts, restore the grade, and install the grate flush with the surface.

I’m near the lake — does soil type affect my options?
Yes. Heavier clay near the lake means dry wells don’t drain well, so a storm sewer tie-in is usually the right move. On sandier soil further inland a dry well becomes viable and can save you the permit step.
Do I need a Mississauga permit?
A permit is typically required only when tying into the municipal storm sewer, since that connection is on city property. Dry wells and swales contained on private land usually don’t require one. We confirm with the city before excavation.
Will the basin freeze in winter?
No. The sump well sits below the frost line, and the discharge pipe is buried 3 ft minimum for frost protection. Water entering the basin in winter flows through to the discharge before it has time to freeze.
