Concrete Demolition Cost in Toronto and the GTA: 2026
Concrete demolition is typically quoted per square foot or per cubic yard removed:
- Standard concrete slab (4 inches thick): $4–$8 per sq ft including removal and disposal
- Thick slab or foundation wall (8–12 inches): $7–$14 per sq ft
- Reinforced concrete (rebar): Add $2–$4 per sq ft for rebar cutting
- Driveway demolition (standard 600 sq ft): $2,400–$4,800
- Basement floor demo (800 sq ft): $3,200–$6,400

What Drives Concrete Demolition Cost
Thickness and Reinforcement
A standard residential driveway or patio slab is 4 inches thick with no rebar. A commercial slab or foundation is 6–12 inches thick with rebar on a grid. Breaking and removing the thicker material takes significantly more time, and rebar must be cut and disposed of separately from concrete rubble. Most GTA quotes will specify “unreinforced” or “reinforced” — make sure you know which applies to your project.
Equipment Required
Small slab removal (patios, walkways) can be done with a breaker attached to a mini excavator. Large slabs, thick walls, and confined spaces sometimes require a hydraulic breaker on a full-size machine or pneumatic jackhammers. Each equipment option has different mobilization and hourly costs.
Access
Removing a front driveway is straightforward — machines and trucks have direct access. Removing a basement floor or a backyard concrete pad through a 36-inch gate is a completely different job. Material must be broken small enough to carry or bucket out manually, which multiplies labour time.
Disposal
Concrete is heavy — a 4-inch slab weighs approximately 50 lbs per square foot. A standard 600 sq ft driveway generates 15 tonnes of rubble. Disposal in the GTA runs $80–$150 per tonne at licensed facilities, or $250–$450 per truck load. Some concrete can be recycled as aggregate, which reduces disposal cost slightly, but not all facilities accept it and transportation distance matters.

The gap exists because asphalt is lighter, softer to break, and more widely accepted for recycling. If you’re replacing a driveway and have the choice, asphalt is cheaper both to remove and to install new.
Permits for Concrete Demolition in the GTA
Surface concrete removal (driveways, patios, walkways) generally does not require a demolition permit in GTA municipalities. Removing a structure’s foundation walls or load-bearing concrete does.
