Interlocking Paver Installation in King City and Across King Township
We are OCM Excavation & Construction, a Richmond Hill contractor working King City, Nobleton, Schomberg and Kettleby since 2008. We install interlocking paver driveways, courtyards, patios and pool decks on estate lots across King Township — including ORM-zoned and Greenbelt properties where permeable cover and Site Alteration By-law 2021-039 actually matter. If you want a quote on an estate driveway, a patio off the back of a Nobleton farmhouse, or a Schomberg courtyard, call 416-317-3090.
Why Interlocking Paver in King City Needs Local Skill
King City paver work is not the same job as a downtown Toronto walkway. You are working in the Township of King — a township, not a city — and the lots, the soils, the bylaws and the architecture are all different. A typical King City estate driveway runs 3,000 to 8,000 square feet of paver surface; the average GTA suburban driveway is closer to 800 to 1,500. That changes how you stage the work, how you grade the base, and how you keep the joints tight from the garage doors all the way out to the front gate.
A few King City realities we plan around on every install:
- Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan — large sections of King Township sit on the ORM, governed by ORM Zoning By-law 2005-23. Permeable cover limits often push the design toward permeable interlocking pavers over solid concrete or asphalt.
- King Heritage Conservation District in the King City core — paver colour, format and edge detail should respect the historic streetscape rather than fight it.
- Equestrian properties are common in Nobleton, Kettleby and the rural belt. We have laid pavers as riding ring borders, paddock entries, wash-stall aprons and manure pad surrounds where the surface has to take horse traffic and tractor turnings.
- Site Alteration By-law 2021-039 — any substantial earthworks or grade changes during a driveway rebuild can trigger a Township permit, with a $500 violation fee at final inspection if you skip it.
- Well and septic locates — almost every rural King property is on private well and septic. We mark the wellhead, septic tank lids and leaching bed before the excavator touches the ground.
- Conservation authorities — TRCA covers south King, LSRCA covers the north. If your driveway crosses a regulated area, the design has to satisfy that authority before we pour a base.
Neighbourhoods We Cover
We pave across all four village cores and the rural concessions in between: King City proper around King Road and Keele, Nobleton along Highway 27 and the estate roads off King Road, Schomberg near Main Street and the 9th Concession, Kettleby in the heritage hamlet, and the broader ORM countryside spanning the 7th, 8th and 11th Concessions. Every quote starts with a walk of your actual property — King Township driveways do not fit a tape-measure template.
Types of Pavers We Install in King City
- Natural stone — flagstone, granite setts and bluestone. The right call for heritage homes in King City core and estate-grade builds where the driveway has to match the stonework on the house.
- Concrete pavers — Unilock, Techo-Bloc, Permacon and similar. Strong, repeatable, available in formats from 4×8 holland stone to large-format 24-inch slabs for modern Nobleton builds.
- Permeable pavers — open-joint systems that meet ORM permeable cover targets and let rain percolate instead of sheeting off into the road allowance. Often the deciding factor on Greenbelt and ORM lots.
- Porcelain pavers — for poolside decks and patios where slip resistance, stain resistance and a tight modern look matter more than rough-vehicle load.
Our Paver Installation Process
- Site walk and measure — driveway turning radii, gate clearances, grade run-off, well and septic locations.
- ORM, Greenbelt and conservation pre-check — confirm whether 2005-23 ORM rules, TRCA or LSRCA permits apply before we price the job.
- Excavation to 250–350 mm below finished grade for driveways, shallower for patios. Pavers themselves are above the 1.2 m OBC frost line, but base depth is what stops the heave.
- Woven and non-woven geotextile separation between subgrade and base — non-negotiable on the clay-and-till mix common in north King.
- Compacted Granular A base in lifts, screed bedding layer, then paver lay, edge restraint and polymeric or open-joint sand depending on the system.
- Final grade check, edge tie-in to existing concrete or asphalt, and full clean-up before we leave the site.
What Affects Paver Cost in King City
- Square footage — estate driveways often run 3,000–8,000 sq ft. That is the single biggest line item.
- Paver type — natural stone and large-format porcelain sit at the top, standard concrete pavers in the middle, basic holland stone at the bottom.
- Base depth — heavier vehicles, equestrian trailers and farm equipment mean a deeper base than a suburban car driveway.
- ORM permeable upgrades — open-graded base and permeable joint material add material cost but solve the permeable-cover requirement on ORM lots.
- Site Alteration 2021-039 permit work — if grading is extensive, Township fees and engineered drawings get added in.
- Well and septic protection — locating, hand-digging near tank lids, and routing the driveway around the leaching bed all take time.

FAQ
Do I need a Township permit to repave my driveway in King City?
A like-for-like paver replacement at the same grade usually does not trigger Site Alteration By-law 2021-039. Once you start changing grades, widening the driveway, adding a new entrance or moving substantial fill, the Township will expect a Site Alteration submission. We check before we dig, since the violation fee at final inspection is $500.
Are permeable pavers really required on ORM properties?
Not always required, but often the cleanest way to meet the permeable cover limits in ORM Zoning By-law 2005-23. If your lot is inside the Oak Ridges Moraine or the Greenbelt overlay, we look at total hard surface, existing buildings and proposed driveway area, then design a permeable or hybrid system that hits the target.
Can interlocking pavers handle horse trailers and tractors?
Yes, with the right base. On equestrian properties in Nobleton and Kettleby we deepen the granular base, tighten the compaction passes and pick a paver thickness rated for vehicular load. Standard 60 mm pavers work for cars; 80 mm pavers with a deeper base are the call for trailers and farm equipment.
How long does a King City estate driveway take to install?
It depends on size, weather and base condition. A 4,000 sq ft estate driveway typically runs longer than a small urban job because of the excavation volume and the base lifts involved. We walk you through the schedule on site, including any conservation or Township timelines that have to clear before we start.
