Mini-Excavator Services in King City, Nobleton, Schomberg and Kettleby
OCM Excavation runs rubber-tracked mini-excavators across the Township of King — King City core, Nobleton, Schomberg, Kettleby and the Oak Ridges Moraine countryside in between. We are an excavation contractor based in Richmond Hill, owner-operated since 2008, and most of our King City work involves threading a 1-3 tonne machine through a 36-inch gate, working under mature canopy, or staging off a paddock without leaving ruts. Why mini-excavator work in King City is in demand
King is not a tract-housing municipality. A large share of the Township sits inside the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan Area and the Greenbelt, and properties tend to be estate lots of one to five-plus acres with mature landscaping, established gardens and heritage trees. A 20-tonne excavator on those sites is the wrong tool — it cuts the lawn, compacts the root zone of trees you cannot replace, and on Moraine lands it disturbs the permeable cover that feeds aquifer recharge.
King’s Site Alteration By-law ties grading and fill activity to the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, and the Township’s Oak Ridges Moraine Zoning By-law 2005-23 layers further restrictions on Moraine and Greenbelt lands. Mini-excavator work is also the practical answer in the heritage cores of King City and Schomberg, where mature street trees and tight rear-yard access make a full-size machine impossible. On equestrian properties through the Lloydtown and 15th Sideroad belt, the same logic applies — clients do not want a tracked excavator across their paddocks.
What we use mini-excavators for in King City
- Pool excavation on estate lots where the only access is a side gate or a gap between mature cedars
- Small foundation digs — additions, garages, pool houses, detached studios
- Septic field excavation and repairs across rural King, where shallow tracks and minimal soil disturbance matter
- Well-to-house trenching for water lines, with auger attachments for post bases along the run
- Walkout basement excavation on sloped Moraine lots
- Hot tub bases, patio sub-grades and deck footings on landscaped properties where full-size access is closed off
- Drainage and french-drain trenching in tight courtyards and around foundation perimeters
- In-yard demolition — old pool fills, shed pads, concrete walks and stairs
- Equestrian work — paddock drainage, run-in shed footings, manure pad bases, sand-ring sub-grades
For larger-scale jobs that still need a small footprint, see our GTA-wide mini-excavator services page. For broader site work in the Township, see our King City excavation contractor page.
Our mini-excavator fleet and why rubber tracks matter on the Moraine
We run machines in the 1-tonne to 3-tonne class. The 1-tonne unit fits through a 36-inch gate and is what we use on King City core lots where the side path is fence-to-fence. The 3-tonne machine is the workhorse for pool digs, foundations and septic fields on the larger Nobleton, Schomberg and Kettleby properties. All units are rubber-tracked — that matters on the Oak Ridges Moraine because steel tracks cut into topsoil and disrupt the permeable cover the Plan is designed to protect. Rubber tracks also let us work over interlock, driveways and irrigated lawns with plywood mats and no rut damage.
Standard attachments we bring to King jobs include a hydraulic breaker for concrete and frost, a hydraulic thumb for clean demolition pickup, and an auger for fence posts, deck piers and helical-style footings. Pair the mini with a tracked dumper and we can move spoil across a paddock or down a 200-foot driveway without ever putting a wheel on the lawn.
What affects mini-excavator cost in King City
- Hourly vs. day rate — short trenching and post holes are usually billed by the hour; pool digs, foundations and septic fields are quoted as a fixed scope
- Transport — King is at the north edge of our service area; float time from Richmond Hill to Schomberg or Kettleby is longer than a Richmond Hill or Aurora job and gets reflected in the mobilization line
- Attachments — breaker, auger and thumb time is itemized separately when the job calls for them
- Soil disposal — under Ontario Regulation 406/19, excess soil from your site has to be characterized and hauled to a receiving site that will accept it; clean fill from a residential lot moves cheaply, contaminated or mixed soil does not
- ORM and Greenbelt context — work that triggers Township site-alteration review, or that needs TRCA or LSRCA permits on regulated lands, carries permit lead time we will flag at quote
- Access and restoration — fence panels lifted and re-set, lawn restoration after the work, and mat protection on hardscapes
Areas we cover across the Township of King
King City core (including the Keele and King Road heritage area), Nobleton, Schomberg, Kettleby, Pottageville, Snowball, Lloydtown, Strange and the rural Oak Ridges Moraine acreages between them. We also work the King-Aurora and King-Vaughan boundaries regularly, which keeps our mobilization to the north end of the Township efficient.
Frequently asked questions
How small a gate can your mini-excavator fit through?
Our 1-tonne machine fits through a clear opening of about 36 inches with the blade and tracks set narrow. The 3-tonne unit needs roughly 60 inches. Before we mobilize to a King City lot we ask for a photo of the gate or the side-yard pinch point so we bring the right machine the first time.
Do I need a permit to do site work on an Oak Ridges Moraine property in King?
It depends on the work. Routine landscaping and minor grading on an existing residential lot generally do not, but anything that places fill, alters drainage or changes grade can be captured by King Township’s Site Alteration By-law and the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan. Work on regulated lands may also need a Conservation Authority permit. We check the mapping before we dig.
Will a mini-excavator damage my lawn or paddock?
On dry ground with rubber tracks and plywood mats, surface impact is minimal — the machine ground pressure is closer to a person walking across the lawn than to a vehicle. On wet ground or soft paddock footing we either wait for conditions to improve or lay full matting along the travel path. Either way, we tell you what to expect before we start.
Can you trench from a well or septic to the house without tearing up the driveway?
Most of the time, yes. A 3-tonne mini-excavator can run a clean trench around an asphalt driveway rather than across it, and on long rural runs we coordinate the trench so it follows existing disturbed corridors. Where a crossing is unavoidable we saw-cut, dig, sleeve and restore the surface as part of the scope.
