Pool Excavation in Aurora — Vinyl, Fiberglass, Concrete

We dig backyard pools across Aurora — vinyl-liner, fiberglass drop-in, and full concrete gunite. From the estate lots off Bathurst to the deeper backyards in Bayview Wellington and Hills of St Andrew, we handle the layout, the excavation, the haul-off, and the backfill. If you’ve got a pool builder lined up and need a crew to cut the hole, or you want one contractor running the dirt-side from pre-grade to compaction, call OCM at 416-317-3090. Pool excavation Aurora homeowners book us for is what we do every week through the build season.

Pool Types We Excavate in Aurora

Different shells, different holes. A pool digger Aurora Ontario projects rely on has to know what each pool builder needs the dig to look like before the shell drops in.

  • Vinyl-liner pools — straight walls, flat bottom or hopper bottom. Tolerances on wall plumb and bottom grade are tight because the liner shows every bump. We over-dig 200-300mm on each side for panel/brace access, then backfill in lifts.
  • Fiberglass pools — one-piece shells craned in by your pool builder. Hole gets dug to the shell drawing — usually 150mm of clearance around the perimeter and a clean 100-150mm clear stone base. Level matters more than depth here.
  • Concrete / gunite pools — rough excavation, then your gunite crew shoots the shell. We can rough-cut the hole, leave the over-dig your steel crew wants, and come back for the equipment-pad and patio sub-grade.

Our Aurora Pool Excavation Process

Aurora is permit-heavy on pools. The town wants the Pool Enclosure Permit (Bylaw 6429-22) and the swimming-pool layout aligned with Zoning By-law 6000-17, Section 4.12, before you start moving dirt. On Estate Residential and Rural-zoned lots — common in north Aurora and along the Wellington corridor — the rear-yard pool setback is a minimum 4.5m, not the 1.2m suburban standard. We confirm the survey and setbacks against your stake-out before the bucket hits the ground.

  1. Site walk + survey check. We mark the pool footprint, equipment-pad location, spoil pile, and access route. Locates get called in — Ontario One Call before any cut.
  2. Temporary enclosure. Aurora’s Bylaw 6429-22 requires a 1.2m construction fence around the open excavation before we dig. We install it.
  3. Topsoil strip + excavation. Topsoil pulled and stockpiled separately. Sub-soil hauled out clean.
  4. Shaping the hole. Walls and floor cut to your pool builder’s drawing — vinyl, fiberglass, or concrete spec.
  5. Base prep. Crushed stone base for fiberglass, screened sand or stone for vinyl. Compacted in lifts.
  6. Backfill + rough grade. Once the shell is in and your builder approves, we backfill with clear stone, rough-grade the patio sub-base, and pull the temp fence when the permanent enclosure is up.

Aurora Neighbourhoods We Work In

Most of our Aurora pool digs are in the estate-lot pockets: Aurora Estates, Hills of St Andrew, Aurora Highlands, and the bigger back gardens off Bloomington and Wellington East. We also do a steady run of suburban-lot pools in Bayview Wellington, Aurora Heights, and Bayview Glen — tighter access, smaller machines, more hand-finishing. North and east Aurora can fall under LSRCA jurisdiction along the East Holland River tributaries; if your lot’s flagged, we’ll flag it back to you before quoting.

Site Access on Aurora Lots

The estate lots in Aurora usually give us room to swing a full-size excavator — wide side yards, no fence games. The older Aurora Heights bungalows and the newer townhome-adjacent builds in Bayview Wellington are tighter. We’ve taken fences down and put them back up in a day, swung mini-excavators through 1.2m side gates, and craned dirt over houses on the tightest jobs. If your pool builder has already quoted you, send us the access path and we’ll tell you what machine fits.

Why Aurora Homeowners Call OCM

  • We coordinate with your pool builder’s spec — vinyl, fiberglass, or concrete — so the hole matches the shell.
  • We pull the temp enclosure required under Bylaw 6429-22 instead of leaving it on you.
  • We haul our own dirt out — no surprise disposal charges on the final invoice.
  • We work across the GTA. See our service areas or our broader Aurora excavation page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to dig a pool in Aurora?

Yes. Any pool where water depth can exceed 600mm needs a Pool Enclosure Permit under Aurora Bylaw 6429-22, and zoning compliance under By-law 6000-17 Section 4.12. The current permit fee is $375. Lot-grading deposits and review fees usually apply on top. Your pool builder typically pulls the package, but confirm before you sign.

How long does pool excavation take in Aurora?

Most residential pool digs take 2-4 days for the excavation itself, depending on size, soil, and disposal distance. Add a day for tight access. Fiberglass shells go in the same week. Vinyl and concrete pools have a longer build cycle on the shell side, but our dirt portion is similar.

What’s the rear-yard setback for a pool on an Aurora estate lot?

On Estate Residential and Rural-zoned lots under Section 4.12.1 of Zoning By-law 6000-17, the pool has to sit at least 4.5m off the rear lot line. Standard suburban residential is 1.2m from rear and side. Hills of St Andrew, Aurora Estates, and rural-fringe lots usually trigger the 4.5m rule.

Do I need a temporary fence during construction?

Yes — Aurora Bylaw 6429-22, Section 6.7 and 7.1, requires a temporary enclosure at least 1.2m high around the open excavation before digging starts, with mesh openings under 38mm and steel T-bar posts every 2m. We install and maintain it through the dig until the permanent enclosure is up.

Will the excavation damage protected trees?

Aurora’s Tree Protection Bylaw 5850-16 protects trees with a trunk diameter of 20cm or more measured at 1.4m above grade. We map protected trees before the dig and adjust the spoil path, machine route, and root-zone protection. If a tree has to come down, that’s a permit conversation before excavation, not after.

Do you haul the dirt away?

Yes. We truck the spoil to a clean-fill site and price it into the quote up front. If your lot can absorb fill — common on the bigger Aurora estate lots — we’ll grade it into a berm or landscape mound and credit the haul-off. Either way, no surprise dump fees on the final invoice.
