Excavation for a retaining wall is priced by linear foot and depth of cut:

• Low wall (under 1 metre / 3 ft): $25–$50 per linear foot for excavation
• Mid wall (1–1.5 metres / 3–5 ft): $45–$85 per linear foot
• Tall wall (1.5–2.5 metres / 5–8 ft): $75–$150 per linear foot
• Engineer-specified walls (over 2.5 metres): Quoted individually

What the Excavation Scope Actually Includes

Retaining wall excavation involves more than just cutting a trench. A properly executed job includes:

• Cutting the slope or bank to the required depth and batter (backward lean)
• Footing excavation for the wall base — typically 600–900mm below grade for frost in Ontario
• Drainage trench behind the wall for the granular backfill and drainage pipe
• Soil removal from the cut area
• Rough grading of the finished grade on both sides of the wall

Skipping the drainage component is the #1 reason retaining walls fail in the GTA’s clay soil. Water builds up behind a wall with no outlet and creates hydrostatic pressure that pushes the wall forward. A proper excavation includes the drainage trench — if a quote doesn’t mention drainage, ask about it specifically.

What Drives Cost Variation

Soil Type

Leda clay — dominant across Richmond Hill, Vaughan, and much of York Region — is dense, sticky, and heavy. It trucks at 2,700 lbs per cubic yard wet versus 1,700 lbs dry. More weight per load = more truck runs = higher disposal cost.

Slope Angle

A wall retaining a steep slope requires a deeper cut and more excavation than a wall on a gentle grade. Steep cuts may also require temporary shoring under Ontario safety regulations if workers need to enter the excavation.

Access

Most retaining walls are at the edge of properties or along fence lines — often in tight spots. Limited access forces the use of a mini excavator and manual work, which is slower and adds to labour cost.

Permit Requirements

In Ontario, retaining walls exceeding 1 metre in height require a building permit. Walls over 1.5 metres typically require engineered drawings, which cost $500–$2,000. Add permit fees of $200–$600 depending on municipality. These are separate from excavation costs but must be budgeted upfront.

Wall Types and How They Affect Excavation

• Interlocking concrete block (ICB): Requires 150–300mm compacted granular base + drainage layer behind. Standard excavation depth.
• Armourstone: Large boulders require minimal excavation depth but significant machine reach. Need a machine that can handle the weight.
• Poured concrete or block: Deeper footing required (below frost line, typically 1.2m in GTA). More excavation volume.
• Wood (railroad ties, timber): Being phased out — treated wood leaches and many municipalities no longer permit new wood retaining walls near waterways.
