Types of sump pumps we install
The right pump depends on how much water your basement sees and whether you can tolerate flooding during a four-hour power outage. The pump itself is a $200-$900 line item. The installation around it is what keeps water out.
- Primary submersible (1/3 HP – 3/4 HP): The default for 95% of GTA basements. Sits in the crock, runs quiet, lasts 7-12 years. We spec Zoeller M53/M63, Liberty 257, or Wayne CDU800. $250-$650 for the pump.
- Pedestal: Motor sits above the crock, only the impeller is wet. Easier to service, louder, used where the crock is too shallow for a submersible. Common in older Toronto homes with retrofit crocks. $180-$400.
- Battery backup (DC): Kicks in when hydro drops or the primary fails. Zoeller Aquanot 508 and Wayne ESP25 are our standard. A good AGM deep-cycle battery runs the pump for 6-10 hours of intermittent cycling. $700-$1,400 installed.
- Water-powered backup: Runs off municipal water pressure, no battery to fail. Only works if you’re on city water with 40+ PSI at the supply. We install Liberty SJ10 units in Toronto and Mississauga where city pressure is reliable. $500-$900 plus a code-required backflow preventer.
- Combination units: Primary and battery backup in one crock with one alarm panel. Cleanest install for a finished basement. Zoeller 508 ProPak or Wayne WSSPU50 are typical. $1,400-$2,400.

Saw-cut the slab, excavate the crock pit (60cm x 60cm x 75cm typical), set a sealed polyethylene basin with gravel bed, install a 1/3 HP submersible, run 1.5″ PVC discharge to grade, tie into a new dedicated 15-amp circuit, patch the slab. Higher end is for cold rooms or mechanical rooms with tight access.
- Replacement in existing crock: $650-$1,400. New pump, new check valve, new union fittings, test under load. Same-day in most cases.
- Battery backup add-on: $900-$1,800. DC pump, sealed AGM battery, charger/alarm panel, second discharge line teed into the primary above the check valve.
- Full system with primary + backup + Wi-Fi alarm: $4,200-$7,500. Combination pump, smart monitoring, text alerts on power loss or high water. This is what we put in finished basements where a flood is a $50k+ event.
- Discharge line extension or burial: $400-$2,200 depending on length. Surface discharge in winter can freeze and back up. Burying the line below frost (1.2m per OBC) solves it permanently.
What pushes a quote up: finished basement to cut around, old fuse panel needing a service upgrade, long discharge run, or a high water table. What pulls it down: unfinished basement, panel with open slots, short straight discharge to a splash pad. We tell you which side of the range you’re on at the site visit, not after the work starts.
When to install vs replace — signs your pump is failing
Most homeowners ignore the sump pump until water is on the floor. Here’s what to watch for:
- Cycling every 30-60 seconds in normal weather: Check valve is leaking water back into the crock, or the pump is undersized. Replace the check valve first ($60 part), pump second.
- Pump never runs in heavy rain: Float switch is stuck, impeller jammed, or pump dead. If the crock is dry, weeping tile is blocked, which is a bigger drainage problem.
- Grinding, rattling, or vibration: Bearings going, impeller loose, or a stone in the volute. Pumps making noise have months left, not years.
- Pump age 7-10 years: That’s the working life of a 1/3 HP submersible. If you don’t know how old yours is, it’s old. Plan the replacement before it fails in April.
- Rust or sediment in the crock: Iron bacteria builds up and clogs the impeller. Basin needs a clean-out and the pump should be inspected.
- No backup and no alarm: Not a failure mode, but a design problem. Toronto Hydro and Alectra outages run 2-6 hours on a typical summer storm, which is exactly when the pump needs to run.
Why sump pump installation goes wrong
We pull out other contractors’ work every month. The same five mistakes show up over and over:
- Discharge tied into the sanitary sewer: Illegal in every GTA municipality. Toronto’s mandatory downspout disconnection program extends to sump discharge. If the sewer surcharges back through your pump and floods the basement, insurance can deny the claim.
- Discharge dumping next to the foundation: Water comes back in through the same weeping tile that pumped it out. Discharge needs to be 2m+ from the foundation, sloped away, to a splash pad, dry well, or storm drain where the city allows it.
- No backup pump or alarm: Storm knocks out power, primary can’t run, basement floods. Or the float switch fails silently and you find out when you walk downstairs barefoot.
- Undersized pump for the watershed: A 1/4 HP pump on a Lake Ontario clay-soil lot in Etobicoke gets overwhelmed in a real rain. We size the pump to gallons-per-hour the weeping tile can deliver, not what’s on sale at the box store.
- No check valve, or check valve installed upside down: Pump pushes water up 8 feet of discharge pipe, water falls back into the crock, pump runs again. Burns out in 6 months.
- Pump on a shared circuit: Microwave trips the breaker, pump is offline. Every install we do gets a dedicated 15-amp circuit, GFCI-protected per OESC.

- Free on-site assessment: Look at the existing crock or where one needs to go, check your panel for circuit capacity, walk the lot for the discharge route, quote on the spot. 30-45 minutes.
- Crock excavation (new installs): Saw-cut the slab, dig the pit, set a sealed polyethylene basin on a 15cm gravel bed, tie weeping tile into the basin if accessible. Half a day.
- Pump installation: Set the pump on a flat brick, plumb the discharge with a check valve and union, level the float, seal the basin lid with gasket and silicone to keep radon and humidity out.
- Discharge line run: 1.5″ rigid PVC out through the rim joist or wall, sloped to grade, terminated 2m+ from the foundation. Buried below frost where freezing is a risk.
- Electrical tie-in: Dedicated 15-amp GFCI circuit. Licensed electrician on every job, ESA inspection where required.
- Battery backup wire-up: Mount the backup pump on the discharge tee, set the AGM battery and charger near the crock, wire the alarm, configure Wi-Fi monitoring if specified.
- Test under load: Fill the crock from a garden hose, run the primary three full cycles, kill the hydro and run the backup three cycles, verify the alarm fires.
