Trenching in Toronto and the GTA costs $25–$75 per linear foot depending on depth, soil conditions, and whether you need hand-digging or machine work. OCM Excavation & Construction — 416-317-3090 — handles utility trenching, drainage trenching, and post drilling across Toronto, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Markham, and the rest of the GTA.
Trenching Cost Toronto — 2026 Price Ranges
- Utility trench (water, gas, hydro, telecom): $30–$60 per linear foot for machine work, $60–$120 per linear foot for hand-digging in tight areas
- Drainage trench (French drain, weeping tile): $25–$50 per linear foot, plus pipe and aggregate material
- Sewer lateral trench (to city main): $80–$150 per linear foot — deeper, city permit required, inspection at connection
- Electrical conduit trench (hydro service): $35–$65 per linear foot
- Post hole drilling (deck, fence, pergola): $150–$350 per hole depending on diameter and depth
Most GTA homeowners spend $2,000–$8,000 on a standard utility or drainage trench (50–150 linear feet). A full sewer lateral from house to street can run $10,000–$25,000 on older Toronto lots with long frontages.

What Drives Trenching Cost?
- Depth — every extra foot of depth slows the dig and adds shoring risk. Water and gas lines run 4–6 feet deep in the GTA for frost protection. Sewer mains run 8–12 feet.
- Soil conditions — clay soils are common in Richmond Hill and Vaughan. They’re stable but slow to dig. Sandy or rocky soil in some Toronto areas adds time.
- Access — a tight side yard or fenced garden forces hand tools, which multiplies cost.
- Restoration — cutting through a concrete driveway or asphalt adds saw-cut and patching costs.
- Permit requirements — sewer and major utility work needs a ROW permit from the municipality. Add 2–4 weeks and $500–$1,500 in fees.
When You Need a Trench vs. When You Don’t
You need a trench when you’re installing new underground services (water, gas, drain, hydro, irrigation), replacing old ones, or adding drainage like a French drain or weeping tile system. You don’t need a trench for surface electrical or temporary irrigation — those can run on top.
If you’re not sure which applies to your project, see our trenching and post drilling services page for examples.
Trenching Near Utilities — The Rules
Ontario One Call (811) locates are legally required before any digging. Call at least 5 business days before you start. The locate marks public utilities (gas, hydro, water, telecom) with spray paint or flags.
Private utilities — sprinkler systems, pool lines, invisible fences, low-voltage lighting — are not covered by Ontario One Call. Private locates cost $200–$500 but save you from hitting a line and paying the repair.
Once utilities are marked, we maintain a 0.5 m buffer for hand-dig clearance before machine tools get within 1 m of any marked line. This is Provincial standard under O.Reg 219/01.
Trenching Backfill and Compaction
A trench is only as good as the backfill. Poorly compacted fill settles over winter, cracking driveways and pulling utilities out of alignment. We compact in 200 mm lifts using plate compactors, and use granular A aggregate within 300 mm of any surface that gets traffic.
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep does a water service trench need to be in Toronto?
The City of Toronto requires water services to be a minimum of 1.8 meters (6 feet) deep for frost protection. Gas services require 0.6 meters (2 feet) minimum, but 1 meter is typical in practice.
Do I need a permit to dig a trench in my backyard?
For drainage work on private property (French drain, weeping tile), typically no permit is required. For work that connects to the municipal sewer, storm drain, or crosses a city right-of-way, a permit is required. Call your municipality before starting — Toronto 311 is the best first call.

📞 Call 416-317-3090 Request a Quote →Can you trench through my concrete driveway?
Yes. We saw-cut the concrete first, excavate the trench, install the service, backfill and compact, then patch with concrete. The patch is usually visible but structurally sound. A full driveway pour afterward gives a cleaner result.
How long does a typical residential trench take?
A 50-linear-foot utility trench at 4-foot depth on a clear lot takes one day with a machine. Add a day for permits, locates, and backfill inspection. A full sewer lateral (100+ feet, 10+ feet deep) takes 3–5 days.
What is the difference between trenching and directional drilling?
Trenching is open-cut excavation — we dig down and install the pipe in the open trench. Directional drilling (HDD) bores underground without breaking the surface, which costs more but is used under roads, landscaping, or structures that can’t be disturbed. OCM handles conventional trenching; we can connect you with HDD specialists if needed.
