Trenching Services in Oakville — Utility, Drainage, Pool Lines

We are OCM Excavation & Construction, a trenching contractor working across Oakville from Bronte to Joshua Creek. We cut clean, straight trenches for gas, electrical, water, sewer, weeping tile, irrigation and pool equipment lines. Homes here run from 30-foot Old Oakville lots to half-acre Glen Abbey estates, and the trench plan has to match the property. Call 416-317-3090 for a free quote, or send drawings and a site address and we will price the run the same day.

Trenching Work We Do in Oakville

Most of the trenching Oakville homeowners and builders call us for falls into five buckets:

  • Pool lines. Gas from meter to heater, bonded electrical to the pump pad, water fill line. 18 to 24 inches for electrical in conduit, 24 inches for gas.
  • Irrigation systems. Common in West Oak Trails and Joshua Creek — 8 to 12 inches deep, narrow trench, lawn back in one pass.
  • Drainage and weeping tile. Foundation drains, downspout extensions, sump discharge. 24 inches to footing level.
  • Utility services and low-voltage. Hydro upgrades, water service replacement, gas reroutes; shallow chase trenches across mature Old Oakville and Bronte lots for landscape lighting.

Why Oakville Trenching Is Different

Three things make trenching in Oakville its own job. First, Conservation Halton. If your property sits near Sixteen Mile Creek or Bronte Creek — a lot of Iroquois Ridge and parts of Bronte do — you’re inside the regulated buffer under O. Reg 41/24, and a trench through that buffer typically needs a CH permit before we mobilize.

Second, mature trees. Oakville’s Private Tree Protection By-law sets the threshold at 15 cm DBH — smaller than most GTA municipalities — with $65 for the first tree and $425 for additional trees over 24 cm. Old Oakville, Glen Abbey and Iroquois Ridge are full of protected trees. We route around critical root zones and air-spade or hand-dig when we cannot.

Third, lot grading. Town of Oakville requires a minimum 2 percent slope on front and rear surfaces and caps rear-yard grade at 5 percent over a 5 m apron. Sloppy backfill kills your grading certificate. We compact in lifts and finish to original grade.

Our Trenching Process in Oakville

We work the same way on a $3,000 irrigation chase as we do on a $25,000 pool service trench:

  1. Locate. Ontario One Call ticket placed before we book the dig.
  2. Walk the line. Mark the route, identify protected trees, flag CH concerns, confirm depth with the trade.
  3. Dig and bed. Mini excavator for the main run, hand-dig the last 600 mm from any utility or tree. Spoil on plywood or tarp. Sand or screened bedding, warning tape, layered backfill.
  4. Compaction and restoration. Plate compactor in 150 mm lifts. Sod replaced or laid fresh. Driveway saw-cuts patched cleanly.

Most pool gas-and-electrical trenches in Oakville run 1 to 2 days. Long irrigation systems on Glen Abbey or West Oak Trails estate lots can run 2 to 3.

Equipment and What It Costs

Old Oakville and Bronte have narrow lot lines and tight side-yard access. We bring a 1-tonne or 1.7-tonne mini excavator and a chain trencher — both fit through a 36-inch gate. On Iroquois Ridge and Joshua Creek lots we run a 3-tonne when reach is needed. See our mini excavator service page for Oakville for access details.

Pricing depends on length, depth, soil, restoration, and permits. Short pool gas trenches under 50 feet land at the low end. Long irrigation across a half-acre or a water service replacement with road and sidewalk reinstatement sits at the high end. Every Oakville trenching quote is site-specific after we walk the property.

FAQ — Trenching in Oakville

Do you need a permit for trenching in Oakville?

Most internal lines on private property — irrigation, pool electrical, low-voltage — do not need a Town of Oakville permit. Gas and electrical need ESA and TSSA inspections. If your property is in the Conservation Halton regulated area near Sixteen Mile or Bronte Creek, a CH permit may be required.

How deep do you trench for a pool gas line in Oakville?

Minimum 24 inches of cover per code, tracer tape 6 inches above the line. We typically dig to 30 inches to keep frost and future landscaping out of the way. The gas fitter sets the final depth based on TSSA requirements.

Will trenching damage my lawn or mature trees?

Spoil goes on plywood, not turf. Where the trench crosses the critical root zone of a mature Old Oakville or Glen Abbey tree, we hand-dig or air-spade the last few feet. We replace sod and finish to grade.

How long does a typical trenching job take in Oakville?

Pool gas-and-electrical runs 1 to 2 days. Irrigation across a standard subdivision lot is usually a single day. A full water service replacement is 2 to 3 days because of road cuts and the City inspection.

What about Conservation Halton if my property backs onto a ravine?

Inside the 15 to 30 metre regulated buffer from Sixteen Mile Creek, Bronte Creek or any CH valley feature, we need a CH permit before trenching. We flag it on the site visit and help with the application.

Do you handle the locates and restoration?

Yes. Ontario One Call ticket filed, five-business-day wait, and we restore the site — sod, asphalt patch, concrete patch, whatever was there when we got there.
