Interlocking Pavers in Aurora — Driveways, Walkways, Patios
We install interlocking pavers across Aurora for driveways, walkways, patios, and pool decks. Whether you live in Bayview Glen, St. Andrew’s, or off the Wellington corridor, the Aurora soil and freeze-thaw cycle dictate how we build — base depth, edge restraint, and joint sand all matter more than the pretty pattern on top. Paver Materials We Install in Aurora
We work with the three brands that hold up to Aurora winters: Unilock, Techo-Bloc, and Permacon. Each has a place depending on the application and the look you want.
- Unilock — Beacon Hill Flagstone, Brussels Block, Thornbury, and Series 3000 for driveways. Strong Enduracolor line for fade resistance.
- Techo-Bloc — Blu 60, Industria, and Borealis for contemporary driveways and patios in newer Aurora subdivisions.
- Permacon — Melville and Lamina for cost-conscious walkway and patio projects without compromising on freeze-thaw rating.
For driveways in Aurora we spec a minimum 60mm-thick paver. Walkways and patios can go 50mm. Pool decks get a non-slip finish — important when the surface is wet half the summer.
Our Aurora Installation Process
Aurora’s clay-heavy soil and harsh freeze-thaw cycle are what kill cheap paver jobs. Here is how we build to last:
- Excavation — We dig out 10-14 inches for driveways, 6-8 inches for walkways and patios. Aurora’s frost line and clay subsoil don’t forgive shortcuts.
- Geotextile — Woven fabric over the subgrade keeps the base from migrating into the clay below.
- Base — 8-12 inches of compacted 3/4″ crusher run for driveways, laid in 2-3 inch lifts with a plate compactor between each lift.
- Bedding — 1 inch of clean concrete sand or HPB, screeded flat.
- Pavers — Set tight, cut clean on the perimeter, vibrated in with a roller-pad compactor.
- Edge restraint — Spiked PVC or concrete toe. Without it, the field walks apart by year three.
- Polymeric sand — Swept, vibrated, and watered in. We use Techniseal or Alliance HP NextGel — both stand up to pressure washing and weed pressure.
Driveway Widening and Curb Cuts in Aurora
If you are widening a driveway in Aurora past the existing curb cut, the Town of Aurora requires an Entrance Permit through Public Works. The municipal curb has to be lowered or extended by an approved contractor, and the apron between the curb and your property line uses Town-spec materials. We coordinate the curb-cut application and tie the new paver field into the apron once Public Works signs off. Plan an extra 2-4 weeks of lead time for the permit.
Typical Project Ranges in Aurora
We won’t post per-square-foot pricing because every Aurora lot is different — slope, access for the mini-ex, removal of an existing asphalt or concrete pad, and proximity to a tree-protection zone all move the number. As a rough range:
- Walkways — small front walks usually finish in 2-3 days on site.
- Patios — typical Aurora backyard patio runs 4-6 days depending on size and pattern.
- Driveways — full tear-out and rebuild usually runs 5-8 days, longer if a curb cut is in play.
Call 416-317-3090 and we’ll come out, measure, and write a fixed-price quote with brand, colour, base depth, and joint product all spelled out.
Why Aurora Homeowners Hire OCM
- We dig the base properly — 8-12 inches on driveways, not the 4 inches some crews cut to.
- We are an excavation company first, so the dirty work under the pavers is where we are strongest.
- We coordinate Aurora curb-cut and entrance permits when widening is in scope.
- Written quotes with brand, paver thickness, base depth, and edge restraint specified — no surprises.
- Local crews who work across Aurora, Newmarket, King, and Richmond Hill weekly.
If you want concrete instead of pavers, see our Aurora concrete driveway page. For other GTA municipalities we serve, visit service areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do interlocking pavers last in Aurora’s climate?
A properly built paver driveway in Aurora — 8-12 inches of compacted base, edge restraint, polymeric joint sand — should give you 25-30+ years before any meaningful re-lay. The pavers themselves are rated for far longer. What fails is almost always the base, the edge, or the joints. Build those right and the field stays tight.
Do I need a permit for an interlocking paver driveway in Aurora?
You do not need a building permit for the paver field itself. You do need an Entrance Permit from the Town of Aurora Public Works if you are creating a new curb cut or widening the existing one. We handle the application and coordinate the inspection. Replacing within the existing footprint generally needs no permit.
Unilock or Techo-Bloc — which is better for Aurora driveways?
Both are excellent for Aurora driveways. Unilock’s Enduracolor line resists fade slightly better in our experience, while Techo-Bloc’s larger-format slabs give a more modern look that suits newer Bayview Glen and St. Andrew’s builds. We’ll bring samples on site so you can see both in your own light before committing.
Can you install pavers over my old asphalt driveway?
No — and any contractor who says yes is setting you up for failure. Asphalt flexes and pumps with frost; pavers laid over it will heave and crack the joints within two winters. We tear out the asphalt, dig down to spec, build a proper crusher-run base, and lay pavers on that.
When can interlocking pavers be installed in Aurora?
Roughly April through November. We need the ground unfrozen for excavation and compaction, and we need above-freezing temperatures for the polymeric sand to set. The busiest stretch in Aurora runs May through September — book early in the season if you want a summer install.
How do I maintain a paver driveway?
Sweep and rinse occasionally. Re-sand the joints every 4-6 years as the polymeric breaks down. Avoid rock salt where you can — it pits the surface of some paver brands. Calcium chloride or sand are friendlier alternatives. A pressure wash and re-sand every few years keeps a paver driveway looking new for decades.
